Architecture Division and Function Introduction of Digital Audio Processor

2022-12-19

The digital audio processor can be divided into three parts in terms of architecture. That is, the signal input part, the signal distribution part and the signal output part. The structures of products from different manufacturers are actually similar, with similarities and minor differences.

Friends who have never been in touch with digital audio processors may have some mysterious yearning for this product, because unlike other audio peripherals, what functions and how to operate are all on the panel, which is clear at a glance. The digital audio processor changes the scale of the analog equipment into numbers, and changes the names of the knobs into English, which reduces the space occupied, improves the product functions, and makes the product functions more complete.

Functions of a digital audio processor

In the output channel of a digital audio processor, there are generally several modules such as a frequency division module, a delay module, an equalization module, and a compressor module, as well as functions such as level gain, mute, and signal polarity conversion. There are corresponding usage methods for these functions, and Leimeng Technology will explain them in detail below.

Frequency division module

The crossover module of the audio processor is composed of two separate low-pass filters (LPF) and high-pass filters (HPF). The frequency points of the two filters can be set independently, which is different from the analog frequency divider which can only set the frequency points together.

Because the digital audio processor uses an independent high and low pass filter, it is more flexible in use. For example, assign a 40~120Hz working frequency band to a subwoofer, then set the high-pass filter (HPF) to 40, and set the low-frequency processor (LPF) to 120.

Compared with the analog frequency divider, the processing frequency division module has two different options besides the independent high and low pass filters, that is, the form selection of the filter and the slope selection of the filter. The content of this paragraph will be explained later, so I won’t explain too much here.

Delay module (DELAY/DLY)

The delay module of the processor is mainly used for delay processing. However, it should be noted that some processors use time units for the delay amount, and some use distance units. For details, please refer to the product manual.

Equalization module (EQ)

The equalization of the processor output channel is generally used to make up for the defects of the system, and generally adopts 4~6 bands of full parametric equalization. Generally, there are three adjustable parameters, namely gain value, frequency value and broadband range.

Compression module

The compressor on the processor is most commonly used as clipping protection. Generally, set the state directly to the limiter, and then set the limiter level with the power amplifier.
